Grey-brown bird with a thin beak, grey striped head and brown cheeks. Back and wings are brown, the belly is grey marked. 

Found often below shrubbery and hedges searching for insects staying out of sight. Both sexes mate with several partners after an extensive display of courting.

Found both in lowlands and at higher altitudes up to 2000 m. The Cuckoo lays its eggs in its nest. 
Partly migratory bird.  Birds breeding in Scandinavia migrate to southern Europe.  Birds of west Europe are residents.

≈ PASSERIDAE (Sparrows) have thicker beaks to peel seeds. 
≈ The TROGLODYTES TROGLODYTES (Wren) is smaller with the tail pointed upwards. 
≈ The PRUNELLA COLLARIS (Alpine accentor) is larger and found mainly above 1500 m.
