Orange breast, brown marked back and crown, wide white eyebrow. While breeding the breast and throat of the ♂ becomes brighter orange with black cheeks with clear white edges. The back and head become darker almost black. Outside breeding season, both sexes are the same. In flight the white shoulders and white tail markings are striking. Often found on grass patches on a lookout point preying on ants or flies. Nests at ground level with a well-hidden nest. Unfortunately, early grass cutting is a threat. ⇔ l. 12-14 cm Migratory birds wintering in sub-Sahara and breeding from the west and central Europe to central Asia. LA: ≈ The OENANTHE OENANTHE (Wheatear) is larger and has a grey back and belly.
