Brown songbird with a large round head and short bill. A large dark eye with light edge and dark eye stripe. Evenly coloured with a lighter belly compared to the back and wings, the neck is a little more greyish. Relatively short wings held below the body. Prefers mixed forest and shrubbery and has a very melodic singing. ⇔ l. 13-14 cm Despite the name not often found in gardens, only to feed on berries in autumn. LA: ≈ The LUSCINIA MEGARHYNCHOS (Nightingale) is a little larger and more red brown. ≈ The MUSCICAPA STRIATA (Spotted flycatcher) has a marked head. ≈ The singing of the SYLVIA ATRICAPILLA (Blackcap) is very similar but the Blackcap is more colourful.
