Small round waterbird with a round head and small beak with a light marking at the beak base. While breeding a grey-black head with rust red cheeks and throat bringing out the light marking at the beak base. In winter all colours fade and the cheeks become greyish. Prefers small lakes and pools as well as narrow rivers. Courting is limited to synchronised swimming and head shaking. As with other grebes sometimes the young are kept under the wings and hunting is done below the surface. ⇔ l. 25-29 cm Migrates from northeast Europe to south-west Europe where it is found more on open water. The smallest grebe. LA: ≈ The only PODICIPEDIDAE (grebe) with a light beak base marking. In winter all grebes look similar, others are larger and have a lighter belly.
