Slim wader with a brown back and white belly and greenish-yellow legs. The beak has a greenish base with a black tip. White eyebrow and a dark stripe across the eye. The back feathers have white markings, the wings are an even brown and the rump is white. The tail is striped and in flight, the legs exceed the tail length. Is always in marshes and shallow water looking for little water life, seldom seen at beaches. ⇔ l. 19-20 cm A migratory bird wintering in Africa and breeding in Scandinavia. LA: ≈ Outside breeding the PHILOMACHUS PUGNAX (Ruff) is very similar. The Ruff has lighter but more contrasting colour. ≈ The TRINGA TOTANUS (Redshank) has orange legs and an orange beak base. ≈ The TRINGA OCHROPUS (Green Sandpiper) is more black-white when flying. ≈ The TRINGA NEBULARIA (Greenshank) is larger and more grey coloured.
