Rust red head with a large crest with black white markings and a long beak. A slender ochre coloured body, the wings have black and white bands and the black tail has a white band. That large crest can be lowered to look like a pointy rear head. Both sexes look the same. The flight is undulating giving away its identity. It uses its long beak to find bugs among grasses and bushes. ⇔ l. 26-28 cm A migratory bird wintering in southern Europe, Africa and Asia breeding as far north as central Europe. There are several subspecies sometimes treated as different species, the differences in size and colour are minimal. The national bird of Israel.
