Very large grey-brown marked hawk moth. The smaller rear wing has more contrast. The body is pink white black striped, the proboscis (sort of tongue) is longer than its body. The ♂ has some black lines on the front wing and thicker longer antennae. While resting against a tree the wings are folded like a tent giving it excellent camouflage in the daytime. Is active at twilight and night preferring strong scenting KALIX (sepal flowers). Light attracts them immensely. A rather long caterpillar up to 12 cm and very variable in colour and pattern. Has an arrow pattern towards the back. ⇔ wsp. 80-120 mm syn. HERSE CONVOLVULI A migratory butterfly preferring warmer climate and rare in central Europe. LA: ≈ The SPHINX LIGUSTRI (Privet hawk moth) has brown wings and a black collar. ≈ The SPHINX PINASTRI (Pine hawk moth) also has a colourful body, but is a lot smaller.
