Brown with a lighter stripe, and a sharp-edged marking on the front wing. The ♂ is darker to chestnut brown with clear markings and feathered antennae. The ♀is more ochre yellow coloured and the marking is less pronounced, larger than the ♂ and thread-like antennae. The body is densely haired. The ♂ are day active looking for food and ♀. The ♀ is mainly active at night. The ♀ does not attach her eggs to plant stems but spreads them on the surface. The caterpillar grows to 8 cm in length, initially black with orange diamond-shaped markings to become a white length stripe with grey brushes on its back later. ⇔ wsp. 48-75 mm LA: ≈ The LASIOCAMPA TRIFOLII (Grass eggar) is similar but smaller and has a less distinct cross line. The Caterpillar has an orange head.
