The upper surface is black-brown with a wide band of white markings. The under surface is orange with a wide white band and along the rear edge a double row of black markings. The body is bluish-white. Rarely found on flowers but seen more often on moist soil such as forest trails. ⇔ wsp. 45-52 mm The caterpillar winters curled up in a leave. LA: ≈ The LIMENITIS POPULI (Poplar Admiral) has orange at the upper surface. ≈ The LIMENITIS REDUCTA (Southern white admiral) has a blue tinge at the upper surface. Both have an extra white marking on the leading edge.
