Small butterfly with orange front wings with black markings and a black edge. The rear wings are dark brown with an orange edge and a tiny tail. The front wing under surface is coloured the same as the upper surface, the rear wing under surface is grey-brown with black markings. Both sexes have same markings. ⇔ wsp. 22-27 mm syn. American Copper, Common Copper LA: ≈ The ♀ of the LYCAENA DISPAR (Large copper) is similar but has an orange edge at the undersurface of the rear wing. ≈ The ♀ of the LYCAENA TITYRUS (Sooty copper) and LYCAENA HIPPOTHOE (Purple-edged copper) both have more dark markings on the front wing.
