A notched wing edge, upper surface orange-red with black markings, the pattern and colours can be variable. Under surface is brown with yellow markings and a white "C" shape centred on the rear wing. The first generation is lighter in colour on the under surface than the second generation. The second generation winters as a butterfly to lay eggs in spring. The caterpillar is orange with black markings, it has white thorns towards the front and yellow ones to the rear. In the daytime, they hide under leaves. ⇔ wsp. 42-50 mm
