A small kestrel with a grey head and red-brown back. The ♂ has grey wings and a tail with a black rear edge, light yellow belly with dark markings and an evenly coloured head and back. The ♀ is more brown with larger markings on the belly and markings on the back. ⇔ l. 27-33 cm Breeds in south Europe and Asia. It winters in Africa and can be observed in large groups, up to thousands, gathering for the night in trees. In the daytime also seen in smaller groups. LA: ≈ The FALCO TINNUNCULUS (Kestrel) is larger and has a marked back and is found also in northern Europe.
