A brown spider with a cross of lighter markings on its back with various shades of brown, the back is shield-shaped. The legs are clearly banded. The ♂ is much smaller than the ♀. The ♀ is during daytime mostly found in the web centre, the ♂ lures her to the edge of the web to mate. ⇔ l. 5-17 mm LA: The ARANEUS QUADRATUS (Four-spot orb-weaver) also has lighter cross-shaped markings, it has a rounder back and the cross is more like it has two cross beams.
