Black thick haired bumblebee, yellow front edge on its breast and hind body and a whitetail. There are several subspecies that vary in colour slightly. Common and found on various flowers. These bumblebees live in colonies underground, with up to 400 individuals, sometimes in abandoned mice burrows, up to 1.5 m in depth. ⇔ l. 15-17 mm syn. Large earth bumblebee LA: ≈ The BOMBUS HORTORUM (Garden bumblebee) has two rings on the front body. ≈ The BOMBUS LAPIDARIUS (Red-tailed bumblebee) is coloured only at the rear. ≈ And the BOMBUS PASCUORUM (Carder bee) has a completely coloured front body. ≈ The BOMBUS VESTALIS (Vestal cuckoo bumblebee) puts its eggs in the nest of the b. terrestris, it has no black ring between the white tail end and the yellow edge. See photo LA. ≈ The hoverfly VOLUCELLA BOMBYLANS (Bumblebee Giant) does its best to look like a bumblebee with its thick hair. But by the eyes and his flight behaviour, you can clearly see that it is a hoverfly.
