Olive brown back and breast, the belly is pure white. Between breast and wings, there is a white band. The upper surface of wings is brown with a thin white band, the under surface is white with brown markings. A straight beak and the legs are relatively short and grey in colour. A faint marking at the eyes. Walks a little bent forward and wags its tail continuously. Prefers solid banks near running water. The ♂ makes nest dimples of which the ♀ selects one. When threatened the ♂ chases away intruders with lots of noise while ♀ hides away with the young. ⇔ l. 19–21 cm These migratory birds are wintering in Africa and a small group in west Europe. LA: ≈ The ARENARIA INTERPRES (Ruddy turnstone) is much darker in colour and has orange legs. ≈ The TRINGA OCHROPUS (Green sandpiper) has much longer legs.
