Dark brown back with light markings, lighter belly and a dark line over the circular light face. Fairly long tail and the claws are completely feathered. Hunts at night and resting in daytime on a branch. Occasionally shelters in burrows. ⇔ l. 22–27 cm A resident bird although the Boreal owls up north travel southwards in winter. LA: ≈ It is a little larger than the ATHENE NOCTUA (Little owl) with a rounder head. ≈ It is also smaller than the STRIX ALUCO (Tawny owl) that lives in the same habitat.
