Thick waterbird with a blunt thick beak, a pitch black head, back and legs and a clear white belly. Thin white lines at the beak and wings make it distinctive. Breeds along rocky coasts in the north. Dives to hunt and follow the prey below the surface. Despite the small wings they are able to fly fast and far. ⇔ l. 37-39 cm A migratory bird breeding in the north and wintering on the sea, always in the northern hemisphere. LA: ≈ The URIA AALGE (Murre) has a long pointed beak. ≈ And the beak of the FRATERCULA ARCTICA (Puffin) is more colourful.
