Brown marked duck with a long thin neck and a long pointed tail. While breeding the ♂ has a brown head with white neck stripes and white breast. The rump is yellowish and the tail is longer. Outside breeding season, both sexes are similar. They eat insects, fish, seeds and berries but also cultivated grain and sugar beet. ⇔ l. ♂ 65-75 cm, ♀ 50-55 cm Partly migratory breeding in Scandinavia and wintering in central and south Europe, the breeding colours start to appear in winter. LA: Outside breeding season, they look much like female ducks, they have a grey beak and longer tail though. ≈ While in breeding colours the ♂ looks like the ANAS PENELOPE (Widgeon) which has a yellow marking on its head. ≈ The AYTHYA FERINA (Pochard) has a light grey back. ≈ The CLANGULA HYEMALIS (Long-tailed duck) is much smaller with a long tail for the male.
