White Swan, sometimes some brown markings on neck or head with black feet. Orange-red beak with a black base. While breeding there is a black lump on the beak. Normally silent but will give a whistling sound when aroused. While breeding the ♂ is aggressive and defensive. In flight, a remarkable hissing noise can be heard at every wing flap. ⇔ l. 120-170 cm Pairs for life, after 4 years ready to nest. The national bird of Denmark. LA: ≈ The colouration of the beak as for the CYGNUS BEWICKII (Bewick's swan) and CYGNUS CYGNUS (Whooper swan) is opposite.
