Dark brown bird of prey with a relatively long tail and wide wings.  The neck features longer gold yellow feathers like a collar. Yellow grey beak and claws. Young birds are very dark with white wing and tail markings.

Day-active and it gains altitude up to 3000 meters to spot large birds or mammals to dive at them.

A resident bird found in mountainous areas in North America, Europe, Asia and Africa. Sometimes young adults are in lower areas if they have no territory or partner. 
The national bird of Germany.
