Greyish back and flanks, dark brown breast and head, light coloured under the surface of the wings, a black bill with a thin grey stripe and dark eyes. The ♂ has a brick-red head, black breast, light grey back and flanks and red eyes as breeding plumage. It prefers large areas of still water, the ♀ breeding close to others. Often seen in groups and diving underwater for seeds and buds. Active at night and mostly sleeping in daytime floating on the water. ⇔ l. 42-49 cm LA: ≈ The AYTHYA MARILA (Greater scaup), BUCEPHALA CLANGULA (Goldeneye) and YTHYA FULIGULA (Tufted duck) have yellow eyes in breeding plumage. ≈ The ANAS ACUTA (Northern pintail) has a white breast in breeding plumage.
