Greyish back and flanks, dark brown breast and head, light coloured under the surface of the wings, a black bill with a thin grey stripe and dark eyes. The ♂ has a brick-red head, black breast, light grey back and flanks and red eyes as breeding plumage.

It prefers large areas of still water, the ♀ breeding close to others. Often seen in groups and diving underwater for seeds and buds.  Active at night and mostly sleeping in daytime floating on the water.
