Large diving duck with light grey beak with a black tip and yellow eyes. The ♂ has a green head, black breast, light grey back and white flanks. The ♀ is brown with a darker head, breast and tail and a lighter coloured back and flanks. The ♀ also has a white beak base.

Lives in large groups on high seas as well as in smaller groups with Tufted ducks and Goldeneyes in still waters. It searches for shells and smaller water creatures below the surface and sometimes it eats seeds.
