Brown marked wading bird with a thick neck, pointed beak and green legs. Head features black cap and whiskers. 

Walks often with a bent neck but can also be motionless in the reeds with the bill upwards, being well camouflaged. The ♂ has a very distinctive fog-horn like sound in breeding season at night, often heard but hardly ever seen.

LA:
≈ The IXOBRYCHUS MINUTUS (Little bittern) is much smaller and has a lighter somewhat yellowish-white belly.
