Small goose with completely black head and breast with a white marking on the neck. This marking is missing on the young. The back is darker in colour and the rump is white, both sexes are the same. The V-shaped group flight is rather untidy and more wave-like. Large colonies are formed and they graze on meadows or salt marshes though they feed on eel-grass as well. They rest ashore and on the sea. ⇔ l. 55–60 cm A migratory bird breeding the furthest north of all geese, around the Arctic Ocean. There are 3 subspecies each with their own breeding and wintering locations. They differ in belly and flank colours but all have a black head. They can mix. LA: ≈ The BRANTA LEUCOPSIS (Barnacle goose) and the BRANTA CANADENSIS (Canada goose) have white head markings.
