Wading bird with dark back, breeding plumage red black-marked brown head with a grey collar and white belly. The red-black back feathers are white edged giving it a colourful appearance, which fades in summer. In winter the back is dark grey with a white head and belly. Searches along seashores for small water life, sometimes accompanied by other sanderlings. ⇔ l. 19-20 cm A migratory bird breeding in northern areas. LA: A light stripe across the wings visible when flying is characteristic for the CALIDRIS birds. ≈ The CALIDRIS ALPINA (Dunlin) has a longer more curved beak and the breeding plumage includes a black belly. It also has a rear pointed fourth toe which the Sanderling is missing.
