Thick sandpiper, while breeding a bright red-orange belly with brown, black, grey white marked back feathers. In winter it is paler with a grey back, white-edged feathers and a grey-white marked belly. The legs are grey-green. Feeds in groups close to each other and move as one. ⇔ l. 23-26 cm Migratory birds wintering north (up to the polar circle) and in winter southwards even crossing the equator. A light stripe across the wings visible when flying is characteristic for the Calidris birds. LA: ≈ The CALIDRIS FERRUGINEA (Curlew Sandpiper) is smaller and in breeding plumage stone red markings on its back.
