A grey-brown bird with a large head, small beak but rather a large mouth. The feather colours assist in concealing the bird. The ♂ has white markings on the wing tips and tail. It sounds like an insect, a sort of snore with the beak closed. Rests at daytime on the ground, hardly visible due to its camouflage colours or on a branch where it sits lengthwise imaging a branch making it hard to spot. Hunts for insects at night both flying as on the ground. ⇔ l. 26 - 28 cm A migratory bird breeding in central Europe to return immediately to Africa. LA: ≈ The JYNX TORQUILLA (Wryneck) has similar colour markings but is much smaller and day-active.
