Light grey dove with a dark grey head and neck, green purple markings on both sides of the neck and a white rump. On the wings and along the tail edge a dark grey band. Red legs, rust brown eyes, a grey beak with a white fleshy skin around the nostrils. Nests on coastal cliffs and inland between rocks or in old buildings. ⇔ l. 31-34 cm A resident bird. The well-known carrier pigeon is descendent from which, in turn, descended the city pigeon (COLUMBA LIVIA DOMESTICA). The latter is more colourful. LA: ≈ The COLUMBA PALUMBUS (Wood pigeon) has a white collar. ≈ And the COLUMBA OENAS (Stock dove) is darker in colour. Both prefer forested areas.
