White swan with black legs and webbed feet, the beak is black tipped with a bright yellow base. Mainly eating plants, both water plants and grasses, the young eat worms and insects as well. The ♀ tends the nest, but once out of the nest both parents guard the young. ⇔ l. 140–165 cm A migratory bird breeding in the north and wintering in west Europe. The national bird of Finland. LA: ≈ The CYGNUS OLOR (Mute swan) has an orange beak with black base and makes more noise when flying. ≈ The CYGNUS BEWICKII (Bewick's swan) is considerably smaller.
