Black white marked woodpecker. The ♀, ♂ and young have a red cap, pink-red rump, yellowish belly with brown stripes. A white marking on the wing, white face and a black neck marking. A thin beak. Rarely drums, but with its long tongue, it finds small bugs beneath the bark. A shallow burrow is carved out of decayed wood. ⇔ l. 20-22 cm LA: ≈ The DENDROCOPOS MAJOR (Great spotted woodpecker) is larger and has a black cap and a red neck marking. Its young, however, initially have a red cap giving a similar appearance. ≈ The DENDROCOPOS MINOR (Lesser spotted woodpecker) is smaller and lacks the white wing markings. ≈ The DENDROCOPOS LEUCOTOS (White-backed woodpecker) is very similar but has a white lower back and the black neck marking continues to the beak.
