A grey diving duck with red eyes. In summer plumage the head is completely grey and the back is black with white stripes. Breast and belly are white and on the black neck, there are white horizontal stripes. In winter plumage the neck is white without the stripes, the head and back are grey. The pointed beak is grey and both sexes are similar. The young have winter plumage. Regularly looking below the surface for fish, diving to follow them. ⇔ l. 60-70 cm syn. Black-throated diver, Arctic Loon A migratory bird breeding up north and wintering more south mostly on open seas. LA: Several subspecies can be distinguished by the green or purple glow on the back throat marking.
