Very small round owl, brown marked with a lighter coloured eyebrow and chin. The back is dark brown with white markings, breast and belly lighter with dark markings. A rather flat head, under surface wings lighter in colour with dark bands. Hunts at dusk for mice and small birds. It gathers and keeps its food in burrows. ⇔ l. 16-17 cm Smallest of owls, as large as a PYRRHULA PYRRHULA (Bullfinch) and has a similar call. A resident bird. LA: ≈ The ATHENE NOCTUA (Little owl) is larger with a more rounded head and a shorter tail. ≈ The OTUS SCOPS (Eurasian scops owl) is similar in size but thinner with ear tufts.
