Otter
A small brown-black seabird with a white rump and white wing band visible in flight. Straight tail and dark legs with flippers between the toes. Mostly on sea and active at night, flying just over the waves looking for food. Dives for fish and molluscs but eats garbage from ships or leftover carrion as well. It only comes ashore to breed and hides its nest among rocks or in the sand. ⇔ l. 14-16 cm Even in foul weather if flies low over the waves. Flying resembles that of swallows or bats. LA: There are several subspecies HYDROBATIDAE (Storm petrels) all of which have dark feathers, living on the sea. ≈ The OCEANODROMA LEUCORHOA (Leach's petrel) is larger and more common.
