Brown-grey marked woodpecker, the back is grey-brown marked, the belly is lighter in colour and the pattern can vary. Has a long flexible neck and strong long toes.

Its camouflage feather colours make it very hard to spot when it is on a tree. Here it hooks onto bark looking for larvae and ant eggs.

In danger, it can stretch and retract its neck imitating a snake. The only migrating European woodpecker wintering in tropical Africa.
