A fowl with a white belly, wings and legs feathered to the toes. In winter plumage completely white with a black tail and the ♂ has a black eye stripe. In summer colours the ♂ has a grey-brown to black marked back and breast with a red eyebrow, the ♀ is yellow-brown on back and breast. Lives at high altitudes above the timberline and descends to lower valleys in very cold winters. ⇔ l. 34-36 cm A resident bird from the Alps but also found in Iceland, Scandinavia and Scotland.
