A large finch with a striking crossed beak. The ♂ is bright red with a grey-white belly and a black tail and wings. The ♀ is paler with a green-yellow breast and head, yellow belly and green-brown back and wings. The young are grey-brown striped. With the well-adapted bill, seeds are easily extracted from pinecones. ⇔ l. 16-17 cm There are several subspecies of similar colours but they differ in song, beak size and territory. A resident bird though it wanders for food in the area, they sometimes arrive in large groups in new areas.
