A songbird with even brown back, lighter coloured belly, white eyebrow stripe and red sides on the brown tail. The ♂ has a blue throat in spring, the ♀can have a blue or a lighter coloured throat with black-brown throat band. The subspecies differ with a white or red marking in or below the blue, or they have a black or red band. After summer the colours fade. Tries to stay hidden in thick bushes close to water. While courting the ♂ shows its blue breast and sings a melodic song. ⇔ l. 13-14 cm A migratory bird and all subspecies have their own breeding and wintering locations. In textbooks, the Bluethroat can be of the TURDIDAE (Thrush family) or SYLVIIDAE (songbirds).
