Small brown-grey lizard with 3 rows of irregular black back markings with white centre points. The ♂ has a green glow on flanks and belly, in the mating season the colours become brighter. The ♀ has brown flanks and a beige belly. Sometimes there are black markings on the belly. Can be found in forest, dunes, fields and heath preferring dry grounds. They mostly dig their own burrow or take over an abandoned one. Is able to climb though lives mostly on the ground. ⇔ l. 16-20 cm Hibernating in winter. LA: ≈ The PODARCIS MURALIS (Wall lizard) is flatter and slimmer and prefers stone, rocks or buildings to live in and climbs a lot. ≈ The ZOOTOCA VIVIPARA (Viviparous lizard) lives more northerly and prefers moist areas.
