Black shiny slim salamander with a bubbly back and a V-shaped groove on the head. Lives in higher altitudes from 700 to 3000 meter in forested or shady areas, even above the timberline. Not water dependent like most salamanders, but it needs the cold. It is adapted to cold weather by moving very slowly. Mostly night active unless in mating season when they can be found during the daytime. ⇔ l. 12-15 cm Pregnancy takes 2-3 years depending on the climate and always results in 2 young. LA: ≈ The SALAMANDRA SALAMANDRA (Fire salamander) has bright yellow markings on its black body.
