Multi-coloured bird with a blue-green tail, blue breast, brown-white head, yellow throat, yellow-brown back, brown blue-green wings, black eye line and a small curved beak. Wing profile and flight pattern are distinctive. Breeds in colonies in holes in river shores, where abundant insects are present. ⇔ l. 29-30 cm syn. European bee-eater Migratory birds wintering in Africa breeds in south-east Europe.
