A small wader with distinctive yellow stripes on its red-brown black marked back and head. Wing upper surfaces are red-brown with black tips, the under surface is lighter coloured. The belly is white with brown and black markings on breast and flanks. A short pointed tail and a sturdy longish beak. Prefers wetlands with high grasses. Keeps hidden, when threatened it flies away at the last moment, landing soon again. ⇔ l. 17-19 cm A migratory bird breeding in northern Europe, Asia and wintering in central Europe and Africa. LA: ≈ The GALLINAGO GALLINAGO (Snipe) is larger with a longer slimmer beak and without yellow on its head.
