A duck with a long flat red beak, dark head and lighter coloured body. The ♀ has a brown head with a scruffy tuft and a small white throat marking. Her neck, breast and belly are white and the wings are grey with a white speculum. The ♂ has a dark green head, a white body and a black back, wings are white with black tips. While breeding he gets a pinkish glow over his body. Eats fish from salt and fresh water. The nest is made in a tree burrow or if opportune, in a rock cavity. ⇔ l. 58-66 cm Partly migratory nesting in the same spot each year. LA: ≈ The MERGUS SERRATOR (Red-breasted merganser) is smaller and the ♀ head colour is extended further down the body, the ♂ has a brown breast.
