A sparrow with a grey head, brown back and white whiskers. Wings are half white and half black with a dark vertical stripe. While breeding a black throat marking and black beak appear. Outside breeding the beak is yellow. Lives in mountainous areas above the timberline and mostly found on the ground. In winters it can be found near residential areas. ⇔ l. 15-16 cm A resident bird moving to lower altitudes in winter.
