A large white seabird with slender white black-tipped wings, yellowish head, blue eyes and a black line at the beak base giving a characteristic face. The legs are black green striped with webbed feet, and the tail is white and pointed. The young start black brown with white speckles to become white brown marked before acquiring adult plumage. Lives in large colonies at seashores. Food is caught by diving from great altitude for fish. The young are overfed and then abandoned. Later, the young find their way to sea on their own and swim until they can fly. ⇔ l. 90-100 cm syn. SULA BASSANA Partly migratory.
