Brown marked wader with a long curved beak, dark brown marked wings and on its back a white V shape extending from the tail, visible in flight. The belly is lighter in colour with marked flanks and a white rump. Its crown is darker in colour and a lighter coloured eye line. ⇔ l. 40-42 cm A migratory bird breeding north and wintering in southern Europe and Africa. LA: ≈ The NUMENIUS ARQUATA (Curlew) is much larger, lighter coloured with a longer beak and no dark crown. ≈ The LIMOSA LAPPONICA (Bar-tailed godwit) has a straight beak.
