Beige brown bird with a long tail, the belly is orange-brown. The back and wings are striped black, white, orange and brown. The ♂ has a grey head with large black whiskers starting at the eyes and an orange beak. The ♀ has an orange-brown head and a brown beak. The young ♂ start by looking like a ♀ but with a black back.

Lives in the reeds and is very well hidden, its loud call sometimes indicates its presence. Living in colonies, caring for the young is a group activity. Sometimes for the second nest, the older young will assist as well.

Mostly a resident bird, colonies can move southward in winter. Otherwise, they only move if the habitat is compromised.
