A buzzard with a fairly long tail, the back is dark grey-brown and the belly is lighter in colour with a white throat. The ♂ has a grey head, the ♀ a brown head. Both have light coloured eyes with eyebrows and a grey beak. The young initially have a white head with dark eyes and a yellow beak marking. Its diet consists mainly of wasps and their larvae, the honey buzzard follows wasps to their nest and the ♂ takes honeycombs back to the buzzard’s nest as food for the chicks and ♀. It has a suitably dense plumage to protect itself from stings. ⇔ l. 52-60 cm A migratory bird. LA: ≈ The BUTEO BUTEO (Buzzard) has a less elongated head in flight, a yellow beak marking and the bands on tail and wings are more evenly distributed.
