Flamingoes (Phoenicopteridae)

Large pink and white bird, black wing edge, pink legs. A fat curved pink beak with a black tip, long neck and legs. Young are greyish.

The curved beak is well adapted to sift through the water for food. Breeds in colonies of thousands of pairs, always in flocks. Monogamous, while courting synchronised dances are performed.

Partly migratory bird. The orange red colour is caused by carotene in the food, the dose defines the brightness. The National bird of the Bahamas.
