Dark grey marked wader. In winter plumage the belly is almost white. In breeding plumage, the belly is black with a well defined white edge. The white rump and black wing base are visible in flight. 

Always near the coast where it bobs the mud for worms and shellfish.

A migratory bird breeding in the north and wintering in central Europe, Africa and Australia.

LA:
≈ The PLUVIALIS APRICARIA (Golden plover) has a similar shape but more golden brown coloured back and is seen inland.
