A songbird with a grey head and marked throat, the back is marked brown and the belly is orange-grey. The beak has a yellow base. In winter the colours fade. Breeds in rocks and on alpine meadows over 1500 m. In winter they descend to residential areas to find food in our trash. ⇔ l. 17-18 cm A resident bird from southern Europe and Asia. LA: ≈ The MONTIFRINGILLA NIVALIS (White-winged snow finch) also has its habitat at higher altitudes above the timberline but shows more white. ≈ The PRUNELLA MODULARIS (Dunnock) is more evenly grey coloured.
